I am pleased to announce that Hendricks Qrp Kits will be introducing a
new kit at Dayton designed by Steve Weber. The rig was inspired by a
talk given at Williams last year by Dr. Bob Armstrong. He said in his
talk about taking radio back packing that his ideal radio would be 3
bands, 20, 30 & 40, have a built in BLT tuner, digital display, battery
pack, keyer, and have all controls on the top of the radio. It would be
about the size of a paperback book.

I thought about this and decided to ask Steve to design such a radio,
and he has done so. It is called the PFR-3, which stands for Pack
Friendly Radio - 3 Bands. The new kit will have a custom painted and
silkscreened case from TenTec made of .060 aluminum, so it will be
rugged. It will have a 3 band transceiver on 20, 30 and 40 meters, that
has a DDS VFO, built in keyer, digital display, BLT tuner, self
contained 8 x AA battery pack, all in a package that is 7.25" x 4.25" x
1.5". All controls are on the top. The 1.5" x 7.25" front panel has
jacks for phones and paddle. The back 1.5" x 7.25" panel has 2 binding
posts, BNC jack, and a power jack for external power supplies if you
choose to use one.

All that you will need is an antenna of your choice, long wire, coax,
balanced line, (the BLT doesn't care), and a set of headphones and
paddles to be on the air. Speaking of paddles, there will be a custom
designed set of paddles available as an accessory that will plug in to
the paddle jack and be supported by two screws that screw into pem nuts
in the case.

How much is this going to cost? $200 for the radio. $40 for the
optional paddles.

When will it be available? We will have kits to sell at Dayton.

Is it through hole or surface mount? There are a few surface mount
components but they will be premounted on the board, so it will be a
through hole kit.

How much power output? 5 Watts on each band.

Where can I buy it? At Hendricks QRP Kits Booth at Dayton, the FDIM
Hospitality Room on Thursday and Friday nights, via the Hendricks QRP
Kits Website, www.qrpkits.com after Dayton.

Is the manual online? Not yet, but will be soon.

See you in Dayton. 72, Doug
