I find that on some rigs I can't hear the oscillator without an antenna. I often use my FB40 for various test situations, for example, and it is very hard to hear without something to spread the RF around a little. But put a 6 inch clip lead on almost anything and there's no missing it.

On the other hand, the oscillators in my 2N2 are 20 over with no help, so it seems to be very rig-dependent.
