Subject:  Through Hole Version of FireFly SDR Kit Now Available.

If you have been hesitating to get into SDR radio because of the kits only being surface mount, your wait is over.

We are pleased to announce that Hendricks QRP Kits now has a through hole version of the Dan Tayloe, N7VE designed FireFly SDR Transceiver. Dan and I had many, many requests for a through hole version, and it is now ready. The kit will have 5 surface mounted parts, but we are premounting them for you, so all the parts that you have to install will be of the through hole variety.

The kit will cost $65 + $5 S&H in the US, and $65 + $8 S&H DX. Ordering details are at www.qrpkits.com, click on the picture of the FireFly SDR and scroll down until you get to the Through Hole Version. We have 20 and 30 meter versions available.

Here is Dan's description of the improvements made to this version.
Firefly SDR TH Improvements:

1) Through hole!!! There is now a choice! The five surface mounted
parts have been pre-mounted (detector, audio preamp, and three SOT23
MOSFETs).

2) An active low mute signal was added in order to allow the possibility
of a future mute input from the SDR software. The same signal can be
produced on the current board with a 2N7000 and a 10K pull up resistor.

3) An second audio input has been allowed for the output from the PC to be
mixed back into the cw sidetone output for those who want a combined
SDR/CW sidetone audio output.

4) Both the 20 and 30m versions should now run 3 to 3.5w.

5) 22 uf decoupling caps have been added between two of the detector
caps and the inverting inputs of the post-detector in order to eliminate
any DC offset out of the audio pre-amp. This modification can be done
to the current surface mounted version (the two cap locations are
currently shorted) and will allow maximum dynamic range by allowing the
op-amp output to be optimally DC centered.

6) The phasing adjust trimmer has been eliminated and replaced with
fixed caps. Even with the variable trimmer, both phasing and amplitude
adjustments need to be made in software anyway.

7) The oscillator transistors have been replace with an improved device
SS9018.

Most of these changes are fairly minor, but this latest pass allows a few
of these upgrades to get put into place.

- Dan, N7VE

All the parts are in and kitted. The boards will be delivered on Thursday of this week. We are accepting orders now, and look to start shipping by Jan. 1st if not sooner. Dan will be writing the new manual this weekend and should have it done in a few days. We will post it to the website when it is done.

72, Doug, KI6DS
