Often they would go to a lot of trouble finding a Ham locally and just about any Ham would be willing to help them. How proudly I would say "I'm using less power than that light bulb and I can communicate with the world." Just about all of them became Hams. Trying to recruit someone just to swell the Amateur population is surely a waste of time. Since starting in 1947 I doubt if I've had more than 50 phone QSOs so obviously I'm keen on CW. There's still plenty of CW around for me and at my advanced age I'm not likely to run out of other Hams. It's safe to say most of the younger Hams who have caught the enjoyment of CW will enjoy it for years to come. However so many newcomers are not keen on the technical aspects of radio and their only interest is "How far can I TALK with this thing?" Surely it's best to go for quality not numbers. The old saying comes to mind "One volunteer is worth a dozen pressed men." This may not be a PC attitude but it's my feeling. 73 ab6nd |
