Sure, it's possible. If you have time you will work USA from Europe with 5w to an indoor vertical. You just aren't going to be able to ragchew and make contacts every time you go on the air. If there's a contest on at the time then you will be able to get some rubberstamp contacts in the log.

Look at this way - if you operate from your home in the USA can you work Europe with the same set up ?

Carry a few lengths of wire and try operating outside with wire aerials thrown in the trees. Ask the hotel owners if they would mind having your vertical set up outside for a few hours (and put some radials down).

In the 2003 Elecraft QSO Party I worked W and VE with 5w to a 5 foot whip from my bike (20m and 40m) so it can be done.

Although it's fun to work home when abroad, don't forget that you'll have a great opportunity to work some new countries. On 40m and 30m you will have no problem working 20 countries in a few hours operating.

By the way, if you are QRV from Skye and other islands, check out the IOTA (Islands On The Air) codes for the places you intend visiting. You will probably be in demand and if someone puts you on the DX Cluster may well have some USA stations actively looking for you !

Post a message here when you go and we'll look out for you.
