nuwan -

The SA612/SA602 (those are the numbers for the equivalents to the NE612/602 that are available now) will function just fine as an upconverter, depending on the frequencies involved. I used to have a kit that upconverted the LF frequencies to a ham band using an SA612. The basic NE602 is a balanced mixer/oscillator. What frequencies did you want to deal with ?
