The Puyallup hamfest is the largest in WA and generally the first weekend in March. This year we had a few technical sessions and they drew standing room only. Eric WA6HHQ from ELECRAFT talked about the development of their product line and Bruce Prior N7RR talked on the topic of QRP BACKPACKING--going light and stressed the more head knowledge you go with the less weight you need to pack along. The session was concluded with a presentation on the Anderson Power Pole by Wes Allen of D.C. POWER from Oregon. In the audiance we had quite a mix of operators and in particular we had the distinct pleasure of having Wes Hayward W7ZOI. Sort of like QRP Hall of Fame with all these great gentlemen. We intended to have an operating QRP station but unfortunately the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak...but then there is next year. I do know we need to start working on the display ahead of time and may even throw in some events to attract interest. One idea is to have several 2 person teams that sprint out and set up their respective stations and see how many contacts that can be made in 30 minutes. So balancing equipment selection, band choices and operating skills. To make it real interesting maybe have a QRPp version to follow and divide contacts by TOTAL weight of station. REAL SPRINTS It was good to see the ELECRAFT table swamped with interested hams. They did a lot for sparking QRP interest up here in the land of moss and slugs (smile). Thanks Eric, Bruce and Wes and Wes for your participation. I would be remiss not to mention getting the opportunity to spend some time chatting with Jim AL7FS from Anchorage. Time just seemed to fly by this weekend Alan KB7MBI in Woodinville, WA |
