Thanks John, for the considered opinion based on experience! That's precisely the sort of response for which I was looking. Re the FT-817, I look at it as a sort of "Swiss Army Knife"; don't have many hours on it just yet.
I think my old CX-7B has a narrower filter (the so-called deluxe filter), but I haven't had it on the air in some years.
FWIW, your stance on this is the same one that is prevalent on the FT817 reflector. I gues I'm often tempted by the road less traveled .

PS: Cheap Qsls is selling a tilt base for the FT-817 that seemed right to me and I bought one.
