Well, you can learn from the problems of others, or become part of the problem yourself. Those of us who were stung by the driver problem were typically careful to post the serial numbers of the radios involved so that we might collectively determine just how broad-based the problem was. Did any of us blow it out of proportion? You might not have thought so if it had been YOUR 650 bucks involved! Out-of-box failures are uniquely frustrating events. To NOT raise a little "H" about it says to the industry that our standards as consumers are passive and low, and thus we'd invite other sloppy acts of non-quality control. Icom deserved a slap or two for this one.

When I first contacted Icom, they denied that there was a problem AT ALL. We now know better.

Yes, the 703 is a nice little rig when (if) it works up to its specifications. Still, I am almost afraid to use mine, wondering when it will conk out again. I'll get over it, of course. But the overall experience sure took all the fun out of buying a new rig.

Also, I specifically inquired of Icom as to the suitability of the 703 for PSK use. They said they had NOT tested the radio for high-duty-cycle digital modes operation, and that I was pretty much on my own.

Draw your own conclusions.

In fairness to Icom, their service was fast and (I guess) effective. The dealer, AES, was similarly commendable.
