I believe you are SOOL on tunnel diodes.
About 5 years ago, I was told by someone,
who was in a perfect position to know,
that some company was still making them
- in batches - for a particular
customer, but they most definitely are no
longer available on the merchant market.
That's too bad because tunnel diodes make
the best receiver front end for UWB.

If your requirements are in the HF region,
you can duplicate a tunnel diodes negative
resistance with two BJT transistors. I
don't recall how. It was probably in a
1970's era trade journal. Maybe someone on
QRP-F has seen the circuit.
