Message Posted: Today I strung a folded dipole between two trees out in the country and worked my FIRST CW QRP contact from the field!! My 3 watt signal brought a 569 report from my contact who was running 100 watts and yielded a 579 from me. Antenna was up about 12'& XCVR was MFJ-9030. Power=12-volt gel-cell and my key was the Vibroplex Code Mite. At age 62, and ham of nearly 40 years, QRP has taken hold!! I have a K-1 still in the box to be built later this fall or winter. I've operated QRP using my Yaesu -920 at home but there is no kick like I got when having a Detroit, MI station come back to my QRP. Hope I get this K-1 built and on the air sometime this year since it's been nearly 40 years since I built ANYTHING electronic!! Any suggestions?? I realize my 3-watt QRP QSO is no big deal to the seasoned QRPers who routinely make contacts in that "high" wattage range and more often in the milliwatt ranges. But, for me, it was re-discovering ham radio and realizing that all these years my QRO signals were the "NoBIG DEALS".Long live QRP!! Thanks and 73-- David Baird WA9PDS Catlin, Illinois |
