Getting a wave pattern directional is possibly an art and getting the wave highly efficient is a skill. finding a direction you want to transmit and adding a ground mat pattern of buried wire behind it the signal tends to flow away from the ground plane.

I recall adding a few inches to the vertical, leaning dipole back toward ground determined the skip distance.
Getting the exact SWR was'nt nearly as important as directional charecteristics and getting onto the skywave.
