I think a next logical step for further control might be to use a 10Kpot in series with the 100K. That is ten to one leverage as a fine control. The average 38 holds within 20khz its nice if tx and rx that you are communicating with are matched its nice. When it gets busy and you want better channel separation or to escape qrm or the other guy fades in and out you can adjust nicely with a smooth 1/4 inch turn on the dial. Some of the difficulties others have experienced by getting to much control was chirping and noise. Possibly if you warm different parts of the board and reduce thermal errors that the 38 can be improved even further but it should perform nicely as is. I think since this is the main tuning control that a quality potentiometer is significant as you probably aware. The mod on this unit may also include wiring it where you want. You could get a case that is just right for you maybe aluminum..
