Subject:  CW on broadcast band receiver?

Message Posted:

I just received my license a few days ago, and I have been CQ'ing around 7.11 Mhz with no response. I built a SW+ 40m kit, and rx works fine, tx seems to work, as far as I can tell, but still no response. The weather has been bad (lightning and rain) with lots of noise and I think a lot of folks are watching the events on TV. Also there was a FIST contest (I think) and I got covered by some high power signals. So my rig may be OK but I thought I would check it out.

I tuned an old broadcast band SW radio receiver to 7.1 and found my tx signal. It was not a tone, it was a low buzz. On freqs with a broadcaster signal, my signal was a tone, but it seemed to need another signal to be a tone.

Does a broadcast band SW receiver receive CW tones? Would a low buzzing noise be a typical sound for CW on a SWL rcvr?

Maybe I will get lucky tonight and get through to someone.
