Posted by: Ken Evans W4DU Posted On: 03/10/03 Subject: Test Equipment Clinic at FDIM 2003 Message Posted: Many QRPers have taken the plunge, heated up the soldering iron and tried their hand at a building project –both kit and home brew. Ninety-nine percent of first time builders then find it doesn’t work (some of us 1000th time builders discover the same thing!!). We may also discover how much smoke can be stored inside a resistor or transistor!! At this point we need to rely on test equipment to help find the problem. Unfortunately, some QRPers do not have access to test equipment or an Elmer to fully assist them in the good trouble shooting procedures and proper use of test equipment. Once the project is functioning, we need to know how to use test equipment to calibrate and align it. If you’ve found yourself in this situation, you will want to attend the Test Equipment at FDIM 2003. The Flying Pigs QRP Club International will host this free event. The Clinic will be on Thursday, May 15, 2003, from 7:30 PM to 11 PM. The Pigs will have all types of test equipment set up and ready to use. Elmering* will be provided by both the Flying Pigs and NOGA. If you are interested in learning on how to use a VOM, an Oscilloscope, a Spectrum Analyzer, or other devices, please stop in. If you have something you have built and just can’t seem to get working, please bring it with you (along with schematic) and we’ll try to help you to get it working. FDIM 2003 will end with a talk called “Radio 101”. Take what you learn from this talk and apply it at the Test Equipment Clinic. Or, when you finish the frequency counter at the Buildathon, walk across the hall and learn how to calibrate it and set the offset. There is no registration required. We hope to see you at the clinic. 72/3 The Flying Pigs
