Sid,
Although the SW series are great they are limited in both power and band coverage. If you are getting back into radio I would assume you have no other radio at this time. Might I suggest you take a look at the EMTECH radio. It has 5W+ out and covers 7-7.15+ on 40m for example and plenty of power to drive a speaker. Excellent instruction manual and straight forward to build. Note also that of all the radio kits out there this one has no MODS which speaks highly of how well designed it is. Additionally you get a variable bandwith filter that is invaluable in pileups. For more info go to:
