They are many operators that just don't want a larger a transceiver so they can run 20 watts or less. Some HF operators will want the 516 as a second HF transceiver. The 516 offers a small low power state-of-the-art software upgradable transceiver with 30 or so filters and 10z readout that will accomodate CW and SSB operators. Since their Models 555 and 556 have been discontinued TT needed something to fill that market. I own a 509 that has an external digital freqency meter and 208 CW filter, but I would love to upgrade to the Model 516 and probably will. TT did not intend this transceiver to be a backpack QRP or even mobile rig. Remember also this transceiver is cosmetic twin of their 6 and 2 meter transceiver. Yes there are old and new transceivers out there that can be adjusted to run from about zero to 100 watts, some stand-alone, some computer interfaced, but there is something intriging about owning a smaller HF transceiver, be it fixed or portable types.
