If the tuning range is too narrow, you can increase the cap ( added another cap of the same value )that is in series with the varacter diode, decrease the value of C7 to the next smaller capacitor and add a 5-30 pf trimmer in parallel with C7.

With the 100K pot, which was $16, and the above changes, I increased my band spread from 30 Khz to over 50 Khz and was able to zero in on the low end band edge.

The ARRL book "QRP Power" has many pages of details for this rig. A must have item.
