Great question. The norm is to make the qrp rigs
as small as possible. It is a great size for the
portable and backpacking use, but if it is for the
ham shack then I really prefer to make my qrp rigs
a bit bigger.

Keeping the oscillator circuits (xtal, vfo, dds) in
the original layout area may sure help keep the
dreaded self oscillations and feedback from ruining
your project and countless hours of trying to fix
the problem.
