I've done similar things with the windings from large electric motors. One caveat: The copper wire in these applications is soft, and tends to stretch a bit. Copperweld (copper on steel) is better, of course, but it does cost.

Nothing, though, is better than the 'ol double bazooka on the low bands, if you have the space.
