Yes it is possible by accomplished morse operators that send entirely by rhythum. The impact of the dah being heavier than the dit, and the interval of time between each.
One doesn't hear this type of sending much on the air anymore, it is music to ones ears. One is more prone to hear an kaleidoscope of interupted dits, and dah's.
these days.
Almost related is the listening to the shutter of a signal lamp opening, and closing.
Perhaps in the submarines case the impact, and scrape method may have been employed by a less than proficient morse operator, impact = dit, scrape = dash, a lenghty process to say the least.
