The ground serves as a counterpoise in certain kinds of antenna installations, but most people wouldn't consider an 8 foot ground rod adequate. For other types of antennas the ground serves only to disrupt the pattern and suck up your RF.

The ground also serves an electrical safety purpose, but again, an 8 foot rod would not normally be considered adequate.

Of course, when it comes to lightning protection, nothing is adequate
