Changing the value of a cap did the trick for me. I have not built the circuit in the Elmer 101 project but try these ideas:bridge the point from "B"(after RFC3) to the junction of C36 and C37/L3(the idea is to take C40,D7,8,9,10 and RFC3 out of the circuit completely and see how the rcvr sounds)does that help ? If it does try removing the bridge and change the value of C40 to 1000PF(anything from 560 to 1000 pf is fine). I am not a technical person. just try other peoples ideas and sometimes stumble into a fix that works.
