Good morning all-
I started to put together the SST for 40. I've had the parts here for it since last fall, but for some reason didn't feel like building
it. (could it be too much internet?) When Joanie and I came home Sunday, I felt the time had come. The SST or Simple Superhet Transceiver was designed by Wayne Burdick, N6KR. The idea came after his famous 40-9er.
The 40-9er was a super simple xtal controlled DC xcvr....a notch or two above the DixiePixie (Pixie2). The SST also has a
pretty low parts count but has the advantage of being a superhet receiver and the transmit/receive freq. can vary about 7 khz
using a vxo and maybe even more if I add another xtal in parallel. Wayne wrote an article about the SST including the
schematic and parts list for the QRPp (spring 1997), the quarterly journal of the NorCal QRP Club.
Most of the parts I found in my junk box, the rest came from DC Electronics and Digi-Key. I am putting it in a plastic box that
measures 4.5"-2.5"-1.5". I already have a 40m xcvr, but this one will be smaller and will be my "outdoor" rig. I am building it
on double side pc board using a combination of Manhattan Style and Ugly construction, better known at the shack of
WA4CHQ as "Man'ats-Ugly" construction. Both of these methods, or a combination of the two are a great way to build qrp
rigs or any project for that matter. It is very simple and quick. And once the lids on it, nobody will ever know--that is until
show and tell at the qrp group breakfast!
At the moment, I have the just about finished the receiver portion. I just need to build the vxo and the LP filter and it will be
ready for testing. I am looking forward to trying this rig out.
