IMHO, Forty meters is best as a general-purpose band at any point during the 11-year solar-cycle. This band is, therefore, also the most heavily populated ( this can be good or bad ). You may expect moderate-distance contacts by day and longer-distance contacts by night.

You might enjoy Eighty meters, where wintertime conditions are excellent and where there is plenty of 'room'. Somewhat similar day/night distances to Forty meters. Thunderstorm season on Eighty can be rough on your nerves, however.

If at all possible, visit a ham station where you can give a listen to all the bands.
Your choice of rigs may also be influenced by your anticipated operating modes...CW, SSB, PSK31...and may also be affected by available antenna space.
Happy hamming and welcome back !
