I've also built this kit.
If I set the rig on top of my (linear)
power supply, I also get an annoying hum.
I believe DC receivers are sensitive to
LF perturbations (like magnetic coupling
to the pwr xfrmr), that's why you may
stumble on otherwise strange comments
like "put it in a steel box", etc.

With regard to the "traffic", I find it
easier to make contacts near mid-day,
when it's not so busy, & the ionosphere
isn't bouncing everything at me!
