The PM3 is a nifty older QRP rig with the main disadvantage of direct conversion receiver. Keep the PM3 for nostalgia and get a new 1340. The improvements in the 1340 would make it a more pleasing rig for you to operate. It won't assure you of more contacts but will make them a little easier and more fun to copy.

I personally like the very early (3am - 6am) morning hours for QRP operation when the band is quiet and other operators seem to have much more patience.
