First I had to fix my HB 20 amp supply for my kenwood otherwise I wouldn't have it to copy my second harmonic on 3660 kHz. The supply had blown a LM723. On to getting hot on 160, I took down my box of modules (the candle wax used to hold the coils in place gives them all the smell of roses). I plugged in my home-brew module having LARGE capicators all over the back of it. It seems every time I plug it in it needs tweeking to align it. At 'full power' it wouldn't even move the pointer of my hb watmetter, so must be under 2 watts. But I knew it was putting out power cuz it was moving the SWR meter in forward position about 1/2 inch. I found my signal, at .030 on the dial I was on 1830, and by .060 my signal was to 1800 (tunes funny due to my using non-standard design). If I peak it up on 1830 then the power starts to drop by 1820. So peak power at 1820 and it can tune 1810 to 1830. (Gotta keep out of that DX window!) Later measurements showed between 1.8 to 0.9 watts. My only antenna was center-fed 1/4 wave at maybe 20 ft. I soon worked IL, IA, AR, and OK (all neighboring states) but later got IN, MI, and WI (wow DX!). Noise was awful, signals faded in and out, I worked about all that I could hear, (and at under 2W!). It was fun. |
